Today, I was attached to the Housekeeping Coordinator. In the morning, we attended the briefing session for housekeeping staff. The meeting is very important as it would indicate the due-out rooms and rooms to be cleaned in priority, the occupancy rate and any issues concerning the department. The occupancy is running 100% full thus the room attendants are encouraged to do their best in doing their good. For safety concern, they are issued with a pair of gloves and a black-coloured bag. The purpose of the gloves is to protect their hands especially when handling any solutions. They are responsible for the items and would have to pay a fine if they misplaced it. Handphones are strictly not allowed in during working hours and would have to be surrendered to the security or being confiscated by the Assistant managers.
I was attached to the Housekeeping coordinator. The Housekeeping coordinator is very important as he is the one who controls, plan and coordinate the Housekeeping team. Ali and Han Vui (housekeeping coordinator) have good organizational skill, good verbal and written communication skills and is able to multi-task. I was assigned to assist them answering the phone calls from different departments to check room status, update room status, assign the cleaning of rooms, preparing the task for runners, communication with the Front office and Room Attendants. I realized that being a housekeeping coordinator is not easy as he must be able to work under pressure, have good communication skills and everything must work in order. Besides that, they have to oversee the Lost and Found section.
I was also attached to the Lost and Found section to assist in updating the lost and found items and key in the data in the system. The Lost and Found items are kept for three months in the Lost and Found Room and it would be sent to the Police Headquarters in Outram Park if the owner did not claim it within this period of time. It was quite interesting to find items such as undergarments, shoes, hairdryer and personal items that the guests have left behind.
I have learnt a lot in this department and have experienced the work that the housekeeping coordinator does.
